Girls and Non-Binary in Tech. Over a decade of social outreach at Reykjavik University.

Girls and Non-Binary in Tech is a social outreach programme run by Reykjavik University (RU) for over a decade. The aim is to introduce participants to careers and education in technology – a sector where women have historically been underrepresented. Many students who were first introduced to the world of technology through this initiative have since chosen to pursue technical studies. In 2025 over 1.200 girls and non-binary participated.

The event, originally based on the International Girls in ICT concept, has been developed over the years. There is great focus on getting industry partners involved and participants are given the opportunity to attend onsite visits with several of Iceland’s leading technology companies. On campus participants take part in interactive workshops, covering a range of topics such as video game design, programming, mathematical optimisation, and student project showcases.

Here you have a chance to get to know the project and think about the possibilities for your own institutions.
