Hiking trips with science tips

Hiking trips with science tips is one of several forward-thinking and socially impactful projects led by the University of Iceland that has received national recognition and awards, combining guided hikes with hands-on science education for children and families. Through engaging outdoor experiences, the project sparks curiosity about nature, science, and STEM fields.

A collaboration with Iceland’s largest outdoor recreation organization, the project has given the university´s scientists and students a new voice – speaking directly to children, youth, and families about the nature around them. During the walks, both in nature and urban environments, participants explored topics such as insects, plants, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, wildlife, birds, the arctic fox, and edible resources along Iceland’s shores.

In Jón Örn’s presentation, he will discuss how the project has reached a broad and diverse group of children and families, with the aim of sparking curiosity and passion in the next generation of scientists.
